What lip blush actually is
A wash of colour worked into the lip itself, rather than a line drawn round the outside of it. It evens out tone that has gone patchy, softens a border that has lost its edge, and brings back colour that lips lose with age.
It heals a great deal softer than it looks on the day. What you are aiming at is your own lip colour on a very good day, not a lipstick you cannot take off.
The test is whether anybody can tell. If they can, it has been overdone.
The shade is chosen against your natural lip tone, your skin, and how much warmth your skin pulls as it heals. It goes in brighter than it finishes, and that is deliberate.

What it does, and what it does not
Most of the confusion around lip blush is with filler. They are different treatments doing different jobs, and one is not a substitute for the other.
What it does
- Evens out patchy or uneven tone across the whole lip.
- Redefines a border that has softened with age.
- Makes the shape read fuller and more balanced.
- Corrects mild asymmetry between the top and bottom lip.
- Takes the liner and lipstick routine out of your morning.
What it does not do
- Add physical volume. That is filler, and this is not that.
- Change your lip shape dramatically. It works with the shape you have.
- Look like lipstick once it has healed. If it does, it has been done wrong.
- Last forever. Lips fade faster than brows, so expect to top up sooner.
The appointment
What actually happens on the day
Allow about three hours. Lips take longer to numb than brows, and that part is not hurried.

A patch test first
Carried out ahead of the day to check you do not react to the pigment. Not optional, even if you have had permanent makeup elsewhere before.

Consultation and shade
The colour is chosen against your natural lip tone, your skin, and how much warmth your skin pulls as it heals. It goes in warmer and brighter than it finishes, and that is accounted for.

Outlining, then your approval
The border is drawn on and you look at it before anything else happens. If it is not right it gets changed. Nothing goes into the lip until you have agreed the shape.

The colour pass
Numbing goes on first and is topped up throughout. Lips are more sensitive than brows and take longer to numb, so this part is not rushed.

Aftercare, on the way out
You leave with written instructions and Iyesha's number. Lips are the treatment where aftercare makes the most difference, mostly because they dry out and people pick.

A top-up appointment
6 to 12 weeks later, included in the price. Lips almost always need a second pass, more so than brows, because of how much colour they lose while healing.
Healing
Week by week
Lips heal faster than brows but lose far more colour on the way, and there is a fortnight in the middle where it looks like nothing took.
Judge them at six weeks, not at six days.

Days 1 to 2
Swollen, and a great deal bolder than the result. Lips swell more than brows do. It settles within about 48 hours.

Days 3 to 5
Dry, tight and peeling. Keep balm on them constantly and do not pull the flakes off, however tempting.

Week 1 to 2
The colour looks like it has gone altogether. It has not. This stage catches almost everyone out and it is the point people message in a panic.

Weeks 3 to 4
Colour comes back through as the skin settles. Softer and more natural than day one, which is the intention.

Weeks 6 to 8
Your top-up appointment. Lips nearly always want a second pass, and it is already covered in the price.
Aftercare, in short
- Balm on constantly. Lips must not be allowed to dry out.
- Nothing spicy, salty or acidic while they are healing.
- Drink through a straw for the first few days.
- No kissing until they have finished peeling.
- Do not pick or pull at the flaking.
- If you get cold sores, antivirals need starting before the appointment. Tell Iyesha at your patch test.

Will it look like lipstick?
No, and if it did it would have been done wrong. It heals a great deal softer than it looks on the day. What you are aiming at is your own lip colour on a very good day, not something you would have to explain.
Does it hurt more than brows?
Lips are more sensitive than brows and they take longer to numb, so Iyesha allows more time for it. Most people describe it as uncomfortable rather than painful, and it is worked in stages rather than all at once.
I get cold sores. Can I still have it done?
Usually yes, but you need antiviral medication started before your appointment, because the trauma of the treatment can trigger an outbreak. Tell Iyesha at your patch test and she will tell you what you need and when to start it.
Will it make my lips bigger?
Not physically. That is filler and this is not that. What it does is define the border and even the colour, which makes the shape you already have read fuller. Some people find they no longer want filler afterwards.
How long does it last on lips?
Less time than brows. Lips renew their surface faster and take more daily wear, so somewhere between one and two years is normal, with a refresh bringing it back rather than starting again.
