What permanent eyeliner actually is
Pigment placed along the lash line, either between the lashes so it barely reads as liner at all, or built up into something with more presence. Your eye itself is never touched, and the line sits in the same skin a pencil would.
It is the treatment people put off longest and then wish they had done sooner, mostly because drawing a matching line on two eyes every morning is a task nobody enjoys.
Both eyes match. Every day. Without you doing anything.
How subtle or how strong is entirely your call, and there are three levels of it. Iyesha will tell you honestly which suits your eye shape and your lid, which is not always the one people arrive asking for.
Styles
Three levels, plus the lower line
They are not three different treatments so much as three points on the same scale, from barely there to properly defined.
Unlike brows, these are priced differently, because a smokey wing takes considerably longer than a lash line.

Lash line enhancement 2 hours, £195
The subtlest of the three. Pigment is worked between the lashes themselves rather than sitting above them, so the lash line reads denser without looking like liner at all.
It suits anyone who wants to look more awake rather than more made up, and it is the usual starting point for anyone nervous, because it is the hardest of the three to overdo.

Baby wing 2 hours 30 minutes, £245
A lash line enhancement with a small lifted flick at the outer corner. Enough to give a lift, not enough to announce itself from across a room.
It suits hooded and downturned eyes particularly well, where a lifted outer corner does more than anything you could manage with a pencil in a mirror.

Smokey winged liner 3 hours, £295
More depth and more presence. The line is softened and diffused upwards rather than left as a hard edge, so it reads as smudged and lived-in rather than graphic.
It suits anyone who already wears liner most days and wants to stop drawing it on. It also holds up better on mature or crepey lids than a sharp line does.

Lower line £50
Added to any of the three above. A softer line along the lower lash line, kept lighter than the top so it opens the eye rather than closing it in.
It suits most people but not everyone. If your eyes are deep set or you have any darkness underneath, Iyesha will say so rather than take the fifty pounds.
The appointment
What actually happens on the day
Two hours for a lash line, two and a half for a baby wing, three for a smokey wing.

A patch test first
Carried out ahead of the day. Not optional, and especially not around the eyes.

Consultation and shape
Your eye shape, your lid, and how much of it shows when your eyes are open. A wing that suits an almond eye does nothing for a hooded one, and the difference is decided here rather than halfway through.

Drawing it on
The line is drawn on first and you look at it with your eyes open and closed, because they are two different shapes. It gets changed until you are happy.

Numbing, then the line
The lash line numbs well and quickly. Most people describe it as a tickle or a light vibration rather than pain, and it is worked in short passes with breaks.

Aftercare, on the way out
Written instructions and Iyesha's number. Eyeliner has the shortest healing of the three treatments but the strictest first week, mostly because of makeup.

A top-up appointment
6 to 12 weeks later, included in the price, once it has settled and any gaps have shown themselves.
Healing
Week by week
Eyeliner heals faster than brows or lips, but the first week is the strictest of the three. No eye makeup at all, and no rubbing.
Judge it at six weeks, not at six days.

Days 1 to 2
Lids are puffy, particularly the morning after, and the line looks thicker and darker than the result. Both settle within about 48 hours.

Days 2 to 4
Tight and dry, with fine scabbing along the line. Leave it completely alone. Rubbing your eyes now is how you end up with gaps.

Days 4 to 7
Flaking, and the line looks broken and patchy while it comes away. This is the stage that worries people and it is entirely normal.

Weeks 2 to 3
Lighter than you wanted. The colour is still there, settling under new skin.

Weeks 4 to 6
Back to its proper depth and evened out. This is the real result.
Aftercare, in short
- No eye makeup or mascara for 7 to 10 days. None.
- No lash extensions applied or removed while healing.
- Do not rub, scratch or pick at the flaking.
- Glasses rather than contact lenses for the first 24 to 48 hours.
- No swimming, sauna or steam room for 10 to 14 days.
- Sleep on your back for the first couple of nights if you can manage it.

Before you book
The ones eyeliner clients ask most. If yours is not here, Iyesha would rather you asked than guessed.
Will it spread or turn blue like my mum's did?
No. That reputation comes from work done decades ago with pigments and depths nobody uses now. Modern pigments are formulated to fade true rather than shift, and the line is placed at a depth that holds its edge. What you are picturing is a different treatment from a different era.
Does it hurt, so close to the eye?
Less than people expect. The lash line numbs quickly and thoroughly, and most clients describe a tickle or a light vibration rather than pain. Several have fallen asleep. Your eye itself is never touched.
Can I wear eye makeup afterwards?
Not for 7 to 10 days, and that includes mascara. It is the strictest part of the aftercare and the most commonly ignored. Makeup on healing skin is how you get an infection or lose pigment in patches.
I have lash extensions. Is that a problem?
They need to be off before your appointment and cannot be applied again until it has healed, which is about two weeks. Book the two around each other rather than finding out on the day.
Can I still wear eyeliner on top?
Yes, and plenty of people do for evenings. The point is that you no longer have to. Most find they stop bothering within a month, which is rather the idea.
