What permanent brows actually are

Healed powder brows on a client, softly shaded and following her natural brow shape.

Pigment is worked into the upper layers of the skin to build a brow shape that stays put. Not a tattoo in the way you are picturing one. It sits shallower, uses a different pigment, and fades over one to three years rather than staying for good.

It suits you if your brows are sparse or thin, if they are uneven, if you have lost them through age, illness or years of over-plucking, or if you are simply tired of drawing them on every morning before you can leave the house.

If someone can tell you have had them done, they have been done wrong.

The shape is built around the bone structure and the features you already have. You are not being given somebody else's brows, and nothing is copied off a chart.

Techniques

Which one suits you

Three ways of doing the same job, and the right one depends on your skin, how much brow hair you have and the finish you are after.

You are not expected to arrive knowing which you want. That is what the consultation is for, and all three are the same price.

  1. Powder brows

A machine works pigment into the skin in thousands of tiny dots, building up a soft shaded finish. Think of how brow powder looks once it is blended, rather than individual hairs. It is the most requested of the three by a distance.

It suits almost every skin type, including oily skin, where individual strokes tend to blur as they heal. It holds its shape longer than blading and heals more predictably, which is why it is usually the answer for anyone nervous about the result.

  2. Hairstroke brows

Fine individual strokes, drawn one at a time to follow the direction your own brow hair actually grows in. Close up it reads as hair rather than product, which is what most people mean when they say they do not want anything that looks done.

It suits normal to dry skin with some existing brow hair to work with. On oily skin the strokes soften and spread as they heal, so powder or combination is the better call and Iyesha will say so.

  3. Combination brows

Both techniques in one set. Hairstrokes through the front, where a natural brow is softer and less dense, blending into shade through the arch and the tail where you want more definition.

It suits anyone who wants the realism of strokes but needs the staying power of shading. It is also the usual answer for brows that are sparse in places and fuller in others, which is most people.

Her work

Healed results, not day-one photographs

Every one of these is a real client, photographed once the colour had settled. No filters, and no two the same.

The appointment

What actually happens on the day

Allow about three hours. A good part of that goes before any pigment does.

  1. A patch test first

Carried out ahead of the day to check you do not react to the pigment. It takes a couple of minutes and it is not optional, even if you have had permanent makeup somewhere else before.

  2. Mapping, then your approval

Your brows are measured against your own bone structure and drawn on in pencil. You look at them, say what is wrong, and they get redrawn until you are happy. Nothing goes into the skin until you have agreed the shape. Two or three redraws is normal, not a nuisance.

  3. Choosing the colour

Matched to your hair, your skin tone and how much warmth your skin pulls as it heals. Judged against you rather than picked off a chart, because the same pigment heals differently on different people.

  4. The first pass

Numbing cream goes on first and is topped up as it goes. The pigment is worked in gradually, building the shape up rather than filling it in one go. Most people find it far more comfortable than they were expecting.

  5. A second pass, and a look

Once the first layer has settled, Iyesha goes back over anything needing more depth. You see the finished set before you leave.

  6. Aftercare, and a top-up appointment

You go home with written instructions and Iyesha's number. A top-up appointment follows 6 to 12 weeks later, included in the price, once the colour has settled and it is clear how your skin has taken it.

Healing

Week by week

Brows do not heal in a straight line. They go dark, then they go patchy, then they come back. Knowing that in advance saves a lot of worry around day fourteen.

Judge them at six weeks, not at six days.

  1. Days 1 to 3

Bolder and darker than the finished result, and that is meant to happen. There may be a little swelling, and the skin around them can feel tight.

  2. Days 3 to 7

Flaking. The surface layer lifts and takes some colour with it. Do not pick, do not scratch and do not help it along. Picking is the single most common cause of a patchy result.

  3. Weeks 2 to 3

The stage nobody warns you about. They look faded, patchy and lighter than you wanted, and this is where people panic. The colour is still there, sitting under a new layer of skin that has not settled yet.

  4. Weeks 4 to 6

Colour comes back and evens out. This is the first point at which you are looking at the actual result, not a stage on the way to it.

  5. Week 6 onwards

Your top-up appointment. Anything that healed lighter or unevenly gets adjusted, and that is your finished set.

Aftercare, in short

  • Keep them dry for the first 7 to 10 days. Careful washing, and keep the shower off your face.
  • No makeup on or near the area while they are healing.
  • Barrier balm as directed, thinly. More is not better.
  • No picking, scratching or peeling the flakes off.
  • No swimming, sauna, steam room or heavy sweating for 10 to 14 days.
  • No sun on them while healing, and SPF over them once they have.

Reviews

What brow clients say

After a bad experience with microblading which I found extremely painful, I came to Iyesha to have my eyebrows redone. She is absolutely amazing, the experience was enjoyable and pain free. She corrected the shape and I'm totally in love.
Charlotte Heap Brows,
This is the 2nd time I've had my eyebrows done with her, the first time they lasted for 3 years. The strokes look so natural, like real brow hairs, and my brows are now fuller, more symmetrical and beautifully shaped without looking harsh or overdone.
Deborah Eastwood Brows,
I have been very cautious in approaching having my eyebrows microbladed. I saw Iyesha's work and it was subtle, professional and precise. Iyesha is a warm, kind artist who obviously cares about her clients. Her work is truly superlative.
Belle Benham Brows,

Questions

Before you book

The ones brow clients ask most. If yours is not here, Iyesha would rather you asked than guessed.

Can you work over microblading or old permanent makeup?

Usually yes, and it is a fair chunk of what Iyesha does. It depends how dark the old work is, how much of it is left and how it was put in. She will look at it when you come for your patch test and tell you honestly whether she can work over it, whether it needs fading first, or whether you are better leaving it to go.

Will it suit my face shape?

The shape is measured against your own bone structure rather than picked from a set of templates, so it is designed around your face by definition. If what gets drawn on does not look right to you, it gets redrawn before anything else happens.

What if I do not like the shape you draw on?

Then it changes. That is the whole reason it is drawn on first. Nothing goes into the skin until you have looked at it properly and said yes, and being redrawn two or three times is completely normal.

Can I get them wet?

Not for the first 7 to 10 days. That means careful washing, keeping the shower off your face, and no swimming, sauna or steam room. After that, back to normal.

How dark will they be?

Darker than the finished result for the first few days, then lighter than you want around weeks two and three, then settling somewhere between the two. The colour is chosen knowing it fades back significantly as it heals, so the first few days are not what you are left with.
